FAYETTEVILLE - Arkansas continued play Saturday as they hosted the second day of the Razorback Classic. The young squad’s performance was highlighted by freshman
Yang Pang, who defeated No. 45 Samantha Vickers, the 2011 Central Regional Champion.
Pang continued her strong play at the Razorback Classic by winning her singles match for the second straight day. She defeated Tulsa’s Samantha Vickers 6-3, 6-1, and improved to 3-2 in singles for the fall season. Sophomore
Sarah McLean went to a third set, but fell in an intense battle with Houston’s Elena Kordolaimi 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
“It was a mixed day, but it was highlighted by Pang’s big win,” head coach
Michael Hegarty said. “She really stepped up today. I’m very proud of her intensity and drive to get better.”
Arkansas started the day with two strong efforts in doubles, but dropped both matches.
Yang Pang and Kimberley – Ann Surin fell 8-5 to Tulsa’s Enrique/Vickers, while
Ana Lorena Belmar Hernandez and
Sarah McLean dropped their match 8-5 to Tulsa’s Farley/Saarteinen.
“We have work to do in doubles,” Hegarty said. “The great thing about this tournament is that we have the opportunity to work on some things, and have a strong day tomorrow to finish the tournament.”
The Razorback Classic concludes on Sunday at the Billingsley Tennis Center. Arkansas will compete in doubles starting at 9 a.m. and singles following the completion of the doubles play. Admission to the tournament is free to the public.
