HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Arkansas women's tennis team began their fourth and final team event of the fall season Friday at the Houston Cougar Invitational. The Razorbacks opened the event with two wins, one each in singles and doubles.
Two freshmen competed for the Razorbacks, Ana Lorena Belmar Hernandez and Kristen Mee. The duo opened the day with a doubles victory, defeating Houston's doubles pair of Charlotte Phillips and Jo Garvey 8-4. The win was the first collegiate doubles victory for each player.
Kristen Mee recorded a singles victory in straight sets, defeating Oregon's Lena Macomson 7-6 (3), 6-0. Ana Lorena Belmar Hernandez fell to Rice's Kimberley Anicete 7-5, 6-3.
"Today was an encouraging day to get two out of three wins overall," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "Hopefully we will take a step forward tomorrow and use this second day to correct some things from today."
Play will resume on Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m. (CST). Belmar Hernandez and Mee will move on to face Texas State's Berenice Van den Bergh and Francesa Bernes. In singles, Belmar Hernandez will play Oregon's Sofia Hager, while Mee will match up against Denver's Michelle Garpenlov.
