RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – University of Arkansas junior Emily Tubert took a three-stroke lead and helped the No. 12 Razorback women’s golf team remain near the top of the leaderboard after second round action at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Monday.

Tubert, a Burbank, Calif., native, has posted back-to-back two-under 70s and is in the clubhouse with a 140, three strokes better than second place.

As a team, Arkansas moved into second place shooting a 296 for 587.  They trail sixth-ranked Alabama by four shots and have a 10-stroke lead over No. 20 Texas Tech and TCU who are tied for third with 597.

“It was a little more of a grind today,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said.  “Conditions were tough today with the wind but I was really proud of how we fought all day long.  Obviously, we are four shots back of the lead but still feel like our best round is ahead of us.”

Tubert turned plus-one Monday with a birdie and two bogeys on the front nine.  She rallied with third birdies on the 11th, 13th and 15th holes to move to two-under for the day.  She also birdied the 11th and 13th holes in the first round.

Freshman Gabriela Lopez is tied for sixth overall posted a second-round 73 to match her day one total as well.  Lopez’s 146 was not an easy feat.  She turned three-over today after struggling with a double on the par five eighth hole.  Lopez birdied 13 for the second day in a row and got another on the 15th hole finishing one-over.

Senior Victoria Vela took one stroke off her first-round total and finished with a two-over 74 Monday.  Vela is tied for 19th with 149.  Junior Emma Lavy and freshman Regina Plasencia are tied for 37th overall with both players counting 154.  Lavy shot 75-79 and Plasencia 73-81 for Arkansas.

“Emily’s two-under round today in the wind and rain was awesome,” Estes-Taylor said.  “Gaby’s 73 and Vicky’s 74 were also nice rounds.  Both faced a little adversity in the middle of the round and finished strong.  We have to go out tomorrow and commit to our golf plan and see where we finish.”

The rest of the field includes No. 25 Iowa State in fifth with 598, No. 24 Northwestern with 600, No. 21 North Carolina State with 603, No. 19 Purdue with 603, No. 32 SMU with 607, No. 28 Kentucky with 611, No. 29 Auburn with 612, Michigan with 623, No. 36 Indiana with 625, Kent State with 628 and Nebraska with 652.

Play concludes in the first event of the spring with the final round Tuesday morning.
