BROOKLINE, Mass. - Needing a solid round to advance into the match play field of 64 at the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship, University of Arkansas senior Sebastian Cappelen put together a three-under par 67 to finish off stroke play in a tie for 17th place out of the field of 312 players on Tuesday.
One of just 19 players to finish the two rounds of stroke play at even-par or lower, Cappelen's two-day 73-67(-3)/140(E) earned him the No. 18 seed in the 64-player match play tournament that begins on Wednesday. Cappelen will take on No. 47 seed Steven Zychowski of Mendham, N.J., who shot a two-round 70(E)-73/143. The match is slated to tee off at 8:40 a.m. CT.
Live stats and updates of the match are available at www.USGA.org or by following @RazorbackMGolf on twitter. Each round of match play will held at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., which is sporting a 7,310-yard layout as a par 70 this week.
With 17 players still vying for the final 15 seeds, the full 64-player field and seeds won't be determined until Wednesday morning when play resumes at 6 a.m. Once the final 15 spots are filled, the rest of the first round of matches will begin immediately. The Golf Channel will televise part of Wednesday's first round matches from 2-4 p.m.
No stranger to match play this summer, Cappelen is just 10 days removed from a run at the 111th Western Amateur Championship at the Alotian Club outside of Little Rock where he earned the No. 10 seed following stroke play and went on to defeat the No. 7 and No. 2 seeded players en route to the semifinals. Cappelen also represented Team Europe in the Palmer Cup in June for the third straight year. He has an all-time singles record of 3-2-1 at the Palmer Cup.
Cappelen's second round 67 came at the Charles River Country Club and was the sixth-best round of the day turned in by the field of 312, as he started the morning in a tie for 86th place. One day after shooting a respectable 73 at The Country Club, Cappelen played his first 12 holes bogey-free at four-under before finishing up with the 67. Over the 36 holes of stroke play, he made five birdies and 27 pars. Cappelen has just one bogey over his last 20 holes.
Sophomore Taylor Moore also represented the Razorbacks at the U.S. Amateur the last two days, but failed to advance to match play after rounds of 78 and 79. Moore, the reigning Co-SEC Freshman of the Year, was also coming off a successful performance at the Western Amateur where he advanced to the 16-player stroke play portion.
The U.S. Amateur is the oldest championship in the country, one day older than the U.S. Open. Past winners of the U.S. Amateur Championship include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. This year's championship marks the sixth time the U.S. Amateur has been held at The Country Club and the first time it has ever been played at anything other than a par 71.
Each day of match play will be televised with the Golf Channel showing first, second, third and quarterfinal matches on Wednesday-Friday. Saturday's semifinal matches and Sunday's 36-hole Championship will be shown on NBC from 3-5 p.m. CT.
