TULSA, Okla. – The No. 8/10 University of Arkansas women’s golf team opened the 2013-14 season today at the Dale McNamara NCAA Fall Preview at the Tulsa Country Club, in Tulsa, Okla., shooting 291 to tie for 12th after first round action.
The Razorbacks are just 13 strokes back of the leader and seven strokes outside of the top five with two rounds to play in the first event of the fall.
“Obviously this is not the start we are looking for,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said, “but we learned a lot about this course today. Have to be really specific with our plan especially when dealing with the wind. We will be even more prepared tomorrow with our shot selection and the conditions. We are going to go out and hit one shot at a time and stick to the plan. We are not far off from the lead, we just have to go out and grind and move up leaderboard.”
Sophomore Regina Plasencia leads the Razorbacks with an opening round even par 70 on the 6,168 yard course. Plasencia opened her round with a birdie on the first hole but fell to one-over with back-to-back bogeys on the second and third holes.
The Guadalajara, Mexico, native was steady for the rest of the front nine turning one-over. She picked up her second birdie of the round on the 10th hole moving back to even where she would remain finishing with eight consecutive par holes for her 70.
