RIO MAR, Puerto Rico – The eighth-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team is on top of the leaderboard while three players, Emily Tubert, Gabriela Lopez and Emma Lavy, are tied for second place after day two of the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico, Tuesday.
Arkansas was one of just two teams under par today shooting a five-under 283, the best round of the event. That pairs with the 288 in the opening round and Arkansas has a 13-stroke lead with one round to play. The Razorbacks are in the clubhouse with a 571 followed by No. 40 GRU Augusta at 584. Nineteenth-ranked Northwestern is third at 591, followed by Georgia with 592 and No. 22 Iowa State and No. 15 North Carolina State with 594 rounding out the top five.
Lopez and Lavy both carded four-under 68’s matching Tubert’s first round score yesterday to lead the team. Lopez began her day on the first hole of the course and picked up two birdies on each side along with 14 pars for her 68. The Mexico City, Mexico, native finished her round with six consecutive par holes. Lopez is tied for second with rounds of 73-68=141.
Lavy, a Fayetteville, Ark., native started her round on the second hole of the golf course. She got out quickly with back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth holes and added a third counting two on the par three seventh hole. Lavy gave one back with a bogey on the eight hole but her back nine was solid with two birdies and seven pars for her 68. Lavy is tied for second with rounds of 73-68=141
Tubert’s scorecard was busy but the Burbank, Calif., native got the job done with a one-over 73 in the second round. She opened on the first hole and was plus-three by the fifth hole. The senior settled in and played the rest of the course two-under with four birdies to stay near the top of the leaderboard. Tubert is tied for second with rounds of 68-73=141.
Freshman Summar Roachell finished her day with a two-over 74. Rochelle had four birdies in her round and moved up the leaderboard into a tie for 23rd with rounds of 74-74=148. Sophomore Regina Plasencia rounds out the Arkansas team scores. Plasencia posted a second round 76 for a 153. Redshirt freshman Kayli Quinton is competing as an individual and moved into a tie for 38th overall with rounds of 78-73=151.
“I’m really proud of this group,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said. “We’ve worked really hard and they just really believe in what we are doing. Emma and Gaby shooting 68s and Summar is getting better every time she tees it up. It’s fun to see how much she improves every time and she is such a great competitor and works hard. Emily finished strong with a birdie to finish one-over and Kayli shot 73, another great effort.
“We have a great game plan for this course,” Estes-Taylor continued. “I keep telling them Rio Mar is our competitor and we have to go out and execute our game plan one more day. We are going to continue to committee to the process and have a strong belief in what we are doing.”
