HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – University of Arkansas sophomore Gabriela Lopez fired a two-under 69 and is tied for second after first round action at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Friday.

The Razorbacks opened with a 13-over 297 and are tied for sixth place.

Lopez put together a round with two bogeys and four birdies en route to her 69.  She opened play par-bogey but rallied with a birdie on the par-4 fifth hole moving back to even.  She counted two strokes on the par-3 eighth hole and turned at one-under.  Lopez next birdied the 14th and 15th holes moving to three under, before a bogey on 18 to wrap up her round.

Seniors Emily Tubert and Emma Lavy are tied for 32nd overall with rounds of 75, followed by freshman Summar Roachell tied for 61st with a 78.  Sophomore Regina Plasencia is tied for 75th with an 81.  Tubert, a Burbank, Calif., native finished strong with back-to-back birdies on the 17th and 18th holes.

“It was a grind out there today,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said.  “It was windy and about 40 degrees and I was really proud of what we did out there. If we missed it, we kept that mentality of we’re going to fight for every shot. I can’t say enough about Gaby’s round out there at 2-under.  She just stayed really patient and was committed to hitting one shot at a time.  She did a great job.

Third-ranked Duke grabbed the early lead with an even par 284 at the Long Cove Club, a par-71, 6,233-yard course.  Southeastern Conference members No. 8 Alabama and No. 14 Vanderbilt are tied for second at 293, followed by No. 13 South Carolina at 294, No. 29 North Carolina at 295 and No. 7 Stanford and No. 21 LSU tied with Arkansas in sixth with 297.

The rest of the field includes No. 5 Oklahoma in ninth with 298, No. 20 Wake Forest with 299, Tennessee at 304, No. 28 Virginia and No. 25 Auburn tied for 305, No. 24 Kentucky and Furman tied for 14th with 307, No. 6 Arizona State with 311 and No. 48 Georgia with 317.

“This is a championship golf course that demands specific targets, commitment, trust in the game plan and execution,” Estes-Taylor said.  “We have two more days and the weather is supposed to be awesome.  We’re looking forward to the opportunity to go out there and shine and play our best golf.”

Play continues Saturday and Sunday at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
