BATON ROUGE, La. – The fifth-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team fired an opening round 302 and is tied for third after first round action at the LSU Golf Classic at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La., Friday.

The Razorbacks are paced by senior Emily Tubert who is tied for fourth overall with a one-over 73 in the first round. Sophomore Gabriela Lopez is tied for ninth with a 74, followed by freshman Summar Roachell who is tied for 17th with 76.  Redshirt freshman Olivia Lavy, playing as an individual, is also tied for 17th with 76.  Senior Emma Lavy is tied for 41st overall shooting 79 while sophomore Regina Plasencia is tied for 73rd with 84.

“We started strong today and leaked a little gas coming down the stretch,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said.  “It’s a golf course that requires a lot of discipline and we have a great game plan for it.  The cross winds made it a little tough today but we gave a few holes away at the end.”

Tubert’s round featured five birdies and six bogeys.  She played the front nine even and was up-and-down on the back nine before finishing one-over.  She opened the back with back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11 and she had three birdies and one bogey in the first four holes on the back side of the course.

Tubert ran into trouble with four consecutive bogeys on the 14, 15, 16 and 17th holes but rallied to finish strong with a birdie on the 18th for a 73.

Lopez played consistently on both sides of the course.  A couple of bogies on the front side saw her turn at plus-two but she rallied with back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th holes moving back to even for the round.  She finished her round with a bogey, a double and a birdie along with three par holes shooting 74 on the day.

“We are going to play 36 holes tomorrow because there is some weather coming in on Sunday,” Estes-Taylor said.  “It’s going to be a long day.  We have to stay in it and stay focused.  We’re only a couple shots back of the lead.  We’re going to fight hard and try to win the golf tournament.”

Sixty-second-ranked Purdue leads the field with an opening round 297.  SMU, ranked 47, is second with 299, followed by No. 29 Kentucky and No. 5 Arkansas at 302.  The rest of the field includes No. 16 UCF with 303, No. 17 LSU with 304, No. 52 Baylor with 306, No. 33 Tulane with 308, No. 80 Missouri with 312, No. 142 UNC-Wilmington with 315, No. 70 UTSA with 316, No. 124 ULM with 317, No. 42 Notre Dame and No. 38 Denver tied for 13th with 318 and TCU with 323.
