BATON ROUGE, La. – The fifth-ranked University of Arkansas played two rounds Saturday rallying from a tie for third into the lead and the win at the LSU Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, La.  Sophomore Gabriela Lopez picked up individual medalist honors as the Razorbacks won their third tournament of the season.

It is the second time in program history (2010) the Razorbacks have posted three team titles.  Thirty-six holes on Saturday wasn’t enough for Lopez as a three-player tie sent her back out to the 10th tee to break the logjam.  Lopez got up and down from the sand for par while her counterparts both bogeyed the hole allowing the Razorback to emerge as the winner.

Arkansas wins the team title for the second consecutive year and the third time in the last four years.  Arkansas has had the medalist for two consecutive seasons.

“It was a very long day but I’m really proud of this team,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said.  “We were five or six shots back going into today with 36 holes and it was going to be a marathon.  It was a complete team effort to get this team victory and it is always great when you can walk away with the individual win as well.

“Gaby shot 68 this afternoon and then got it up-and-down for par on the playoff hole after hitting into the bunker,” Estes-Taylor continued.  “She hit a five-footer to save par.  The team is working hard and it’s great that the hard work is paying off.  They are committed to the process and hitting good golf shots.  Everything is heading in the right direction.”
Arkansas, who was tied for third after the first round on Friday, posted a second-round 292, the lowest round of the tournament at that point, and moved into the lead.  They continued to play well in the final round shooting 288 tying for the lowest round of the tournament.  The Razorbacks shot 18-over 882 with rounds of 302-292-288.

Lopez, a Mexico City, Mexico, native, was solid throughout the tournament shooting 74-71-68=213 and finishing three-under for the event.

Razorback senior Emily Tubert tied for fifth overall.  The Burbank,Calif., native shot 73-75-70 for 218.  Tubert won the individual title at LSU last year.

Freshman Summar Roachell tied for 20th overall shooting 76-75-76=227. Senior Emma Lavy got better with each round and finished tied for 25th overall with rounds of 79-75-74=228.  Sophomore Regina Plasencia rounded out the Razorback scoring shooting 84-71-79=234 and tied for 48th overall.

Redshirt freshman Olivia Lavy competed as an individual and tied for 62nd overall.  Lavy posted rounds of 76-81-82=239.

The Razorback win was big with an eight-stroke margin between the top two spots.  Central Florida was second with an 890, followed by Kentucky with 899, LSU wwith 905 and Purdue with 906 rounding out the top five.  The rest of the field included Tulane with 907, UTSA with 909, Baylor with 913, Denver with 915, SMU with 917, Notre Dame with 919, Missouri with 931, TCU with 932, UNCW with 938 and Louisiana-Monroe with 949.

Arkansas returns to the links April 4-6, at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. For more information on Arkansas women’s golf, follow @RazorbackWGolf on Twitter.
