Gambhir Might Get A New Lease Of Life In His International Cricketing Career

As the old saying goes ‘no pain no gain’ and in the case of Gautam Gambhir the pain of KL Rahul may turn out to be again for him. Rumours are rife that Gambhir might play in the Eden Gardens test after KL Rahul suffered a right hamstring injury on the second day of the Kanpur test. This test was eventually convincingly won by the Indians by 197 runs. KL Rahul has been in impressive form for the Indians across all formats. And his potential absence in the playing squad for the Kolkata test will be felt by the Indians.

After KL Rahul had got out for 38, he was not present in the field. Shikhar Dhawan fielded as a substitute for Rahul. The Indian Team management is tight-lipped about KL Rahul’s fitness but, according to sources, Anil Kumble has asked for the inclusion of the in form Gautam Gambhir in the team as a backup opener for the Kolkata test which starts on September 30.

Gambhir last played for India in the England Tour in 2014.Gautam Gambhir is likely to undergo a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru today.

BCCI had recently regarded KL Rahul’s injury as not very serious calling it’s a “Slight niggle in the hamstring” but from the recent reports the injury of Rahul seems to be a bit more serious.

Gambhir who played his last Test for India at the Oval in 2014 could only manage to score three runs in his two innings, and after this poor show, he was out of the Indian squad.

Off late Gambir has shown some good form in domestic cricket. Gambhir was rewarded with the captaincy of the India Blue team for the Duleep Trophy. In this tournament, Gambhir opened the innings for the Blue’s. He scored a 90 and 59 in two innings against the India Green. Gambhir also scored a 77 in the first-innings in the game against the India Red. This game was however washed out. In the finals of the Duleep Trophy, Gambhir continued to blossom. He scored 94 and 36 against India Red which was led by Yuvraj. The Indian Blue team eventually won the Duleep Trophy.

Speaking about international games, Gambhir and Virender Sehwag’s pair was hugely successful for the Indian Team at the top order. However, after the departure of Sehwag, Gambhir didn’t stay for long as well. In tests, he has till date scored 4046 runs and had a healthy average of 42.58 in 56 tests.

In IPLs as well Gambhir can be complemented for his form. In this year’s Indian Premier League Gautam Gambhir scored a total of 501 in 15 matches for the Kolkata Knight Riders.
