The Painful Journey of the F1 Legend Continues

It was clarified in a court hearing by Michael Schumacher’s lawyer that Schumacher still cannot walk after his Skiing accident in France in 2013. Felix Damm, who is representing Schumacher in a lawsuit, was briefing the court in detail about the extent of Schumacher’s injury. The lawsuit was filed against a German magazine, Bunte.

The magazine in one of its reports last year had quoted a source saying that Schumacher, following his almost fatal skiing accident, could walk and also raise his arm with help from therapists.

Damm said that Schumacher could not walk for more than two and half years after he met with the unfortunate accident in which he suffered a head injury while skiing in 2013 and is still unable to walk. After this accident, the F1 legend was airlifted to Grenoble Hospital for immediate neurosurgical intervention.

Subsequently, Schumacher had gone through two life-saving operations. After his admission into Grenoble Hospital, the doctors described his condition as extremely serious and he was in a coma. The health condition of Schumacher was kept under wraps by his family and news was quite scarce until his family again spoke about his health in  April 2014.They gave a bit of positive news saying that Schumacher ‘showed moments of consciousness and awakening’. After three months Schumacher left Grenoble Hospital and was declared out of the coma. He was shifted to a Lausanne Hospital and from there he was shifted to the family home on the shores of Lake Geneva. The painful journey of Schumacher continued as he underwent a rehab programme at home.

Last year FIA president Jean Todt said that Schumacher was ‘still fighting’. Sabine Kehm, who has been Schumacher’s long time manager and loyalist, defended Schumacher’s family move to maintain privacy about Schumacher’s health. She said, “Of course, Michael will not disappear but at the moment the private situation is so difficult that unfortunately no insight can be given. There must be understanding for this.” Schumacher who is an F1 Legend holds many of Formula One’s driver records, including most championships, race victories, fastest laps, pole positions and most races won in a single season – 13 in 2004.

In 2002, he became the only driver in Formula One history to finish in the top three in every race of a season and then also broke the record for most consecutive podium finishes. In February, this year F1 legend’s former boss at Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo, while talking about Schumacher’s health, said, “I have news and unfortunately it is not good” much to the disappointment of the ace F1 driver’s fans.
