Virat Kohli Considers Wriddhiman Saha As The Best Indian Wicket Keeper Currently in The Test Match Format

Wriddhiman Saha recently has earned a lot of praise for his stellar performance in the Kolkata Test. The two fifties which Saha scored in the Kolkata Test played an important role in India’s emphatic victory against New Zealand in the Eden Gardens. Saha who scored the fifties in both the innings was instrumental in taking out India from a very difficult position. His recent performance also earned him the Man of the Match award for the Kolkata Test. He also earned this distinction for the first time in his 17 match Test career.

Behind the wickets as well Saha seemed to be very impressive. His wicket keeping skills of late have earned him a lot of praise with the team Captain calling him the best wicket keeper in the country at the moment.

The Indian captain expressing his pleasure at Saha’s performance in the post-match presentation ceremony and said that he considered Saha currently to be the best wicketkeeper in the country and that he has been performing exceedingly well in Test cricket. Kohli said Wriddhiman is “wonderful” behind the stumps and can bat as well. According to Kohli Saha backs himself to play his shots.

Saha earned the position of being the India’s wicket keeper in Test matches after M.S Dhoni’s sudden retirement from Test cricket while the Indian team was touring Australia in 2014. Saha since then has been regularly playing for the Indian team and has evolved his stature. Dhoni’s sudden retirement from this format of the game came as a surprise to a lot of people. In his Test career which included 90 Test matches M.S Dhoni scored 4876 runs with an average of 38.09. He has under his belt six Test century, one double century and 33 fifties.

Saha’s impressive glove work in the Tests and also his batting skills has earned him praise from former Indian captain Saurav Ganguly as well. According to Ganguly, Saha is superb and his performance graph is moving ahead every day. He felt that Saha’s twin fifties in the Kolkata’s Test will be one of his best in his Test match career.

Ganguly further added that although there was no doubt about Saha’s wicket keeping skills a question always kept lingering in everybody’s mind about his role as a batsman. Ganguly also said that apprehensions about Saha’s batting skills have been put to rest after Saha’s recent superb performance. He cited the example of the West Indies tour where Saha scored a hundred. Ganguly said that Saha is also averaging around 64 in Test matches in 2016 which, according to him, is quite remarkable.
However in the one-day format numbers currently don’t speak in favour of Saha. He has played 9 ODIs for India till date.
