Saurav Ganguly Sees Possibility of Ravichandran Ashwin Becoming India’s Best Test Bowler

Saurav Ganguly former Indian captain has said that Ravichandran Ashwin could finish with 400—500 test wickets. This comment was reported by India Today. This comment of Saurav comes in the backdrop of Ashwin getting his 200th test wicket in the Kanpur test to keep the Kiwis struggling to stay alive with at 93/4 in 37 overs at stumps on day four of the Kanpur test which they ultimately lost. Ashwin got his fifth ten wicket haul in this match which was won by India by 197 runs. This gives India a 1-0 lead in the three-match test series.

Ashwin

Ashwin, after taking his 200th test wicket in the Kanpur test, has broken Waqar Younis’ record and becomes the second fasted to take 200 test wickets.

On the Kanpur fourth day, the downfall of the Kiwis began immediately after tea. Martin Guptill, who didn’t register anything on the scoreboard, was caught at short leg. Guptill is the third batsman in this test to be dismissed after the ball hit the boot and lobbed up. After this, Ravindran claimed two wickets in five balls in the fourth over claiming Tom Latham for 2 in an lbw. After Ashwin had claimed the wicket (lbw) of Kane Williamson (25) in the 18th over, he became the second fastest bowler to take 200 test wickets. Australia’s Clarrrie Grimmmett is the fastest bowler to take 200 test wickets. By achieving this feat Ravichandran, besides breaking the record of Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Younis, also broke the record of legendary Australian bowler Dennis Lee.

Ashwin who is a right-handed batsman and right-arm off break bowler plays for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket and the Rising Pune Supergiants in the IPL. He is the fastest Indian bowler to reach the 50-, 100-, 150- and 200-wicket mark in Test cricket. He has played 37 tests and 102 ODIs. Besides bowling Ashwin has also shown some promise with the bat. He has scored four test centuries, all being against the West Indies. This bowler also has the distinction of having four ten wicket hauls in test cricket.

Saurav Ganguly, who spoke on the fourth day of the Kanpur test, said that the conditions were tailor made for Ashwin. While speaking to India Today, Ganguly said, “The conditions were tailor made for Ashwin to bowl on this sort of a wicket. It’s a typical Indian Test match. The Indians were exceptional with the bat in their second innings on a crumbling pitch and the pressure is completely on New Zealand team. The game is only going one way. it’s India’s victory, unless and until rain spoils sport.”

Ganguly further expressing his confidence on Ashwin said that this right arm off spin bowler has got all the potential to become India’s best test bowler.

Brief Scores of the Kanpur test : India 377/5 dec. (Pujara 78; Santner 2/79) & 318 (Vijay 65; Boult 4/67) beat New Zealand 236 (Ronchi 80; Ashwin 6/132) & 262 (Williamson 75; Jadeja 5/73) by 197 runs
