The British no1 women’s player took the first set in the semi-finals in a tie-break. However, Madison Keys, who is the American eighth seed, seemed to have given a fight back in the later part of the game which lasted for a long two hours 35 minutes.

It is interesting to note that the last Briton to make into the top ten of the world ranking (Jo Durie) was way back in 1984. Konta, after her victory against the American, said that the win was really special for her and she felt blessed to come back in the finals.

Konta’s seems to have suddenly quickened her pace and moved up the ladder and entered into the top 10 of the world for she was until recently ranked 146th in June 2015. This player also now owns the distinction of being the fourth British player to be ranked on the top ten of the WTA rankings. Other players in the list are Durie, Virginia Wade and Sue Barker.

In her semifinals against the American in the China Open Konta was up with a 4-2 lead in the first set after which saw a temporary downfall with her losing three straight games. However, she managed to take the game to a tie-break and eventually won it. With the second set having been taken by Keys, things seemed to be a bit more difficult than it seemed initially for Konta. Keys broke Konta in the first game of the third set but immediately after this, Konta was very aggressive and shifted the momentum in her favour and ultimately won the set and the match. There was, however, a bit of a scare for Konta in between.

Commenting on the recent feat by Konta former British world no1 Jo Durie in an interview to BBC said that Konta’s recent achievement is really terrific. She felt that to move into the top ten of WTA rankings a player has to be extremely consistent in almost all the weeks of the WTA tour.

This elevation in the rankings according to Durie will enable the Briton to get a better seeding in the Grand Slam tournaments and she will be regarded as very formidable opponent by other players on the WTA circuit. According to Durie, Konta has proved herself that she deserves the spot she is in now and is definitely a player to watch out for in women’s tennis in the coming days.
